Leslie Calvin Brown, who was given the nickname “Les” as a child, was born on February 17, 1946. He and his twin brother, Wesley, were adopted by Mamie Brown, a 38-year old single woman who was a cafeteria attendant and domestic assistant. Les’ mother had very little education, but encouraged learning in her sons. When talking about his background, one of the inspirational quotes used by Les is that “we are all born with a certain degree of power. The key to success is discovering this innate power and using it daily to deal with whatever challenges come your way.” Les also says that “just because Fate doesn’t deal you the right cards, it doesn’t mean you should give up. It means you have to play the cards you get to their maximum potential.”

Challenges

He and his brother, Wesley, were born in an abandoned building in a low-income section of Miami, Florida.

PofE 057: Strategic Management Consultant Ram Charan Knows How To Execute Business Strategy

Background and Challenges:

  • Ram Charan was born in 1939, the six of seven children in Uttra Pardesh India, which is located in northern India near the Himalayan Mountains. As a child he a grew up in a second floor home which had no indoor plumbing or electricity. He also pumped water from an outdoor well and collected cow dung to burn in his Mother's oven. 
  • While working in the family business, Ram develop the habit of consolidating everything he learned each day onto a single sheet of paper. He was also guided by the values he learned while studying the Sanskrit literature. He learned the value and benefit of hard work and that mastery had its own reward.

His Challenges

  • Born in San Francisco, California on February 20, 1902.
  • His parents were upper-class and his father owned a lumber business that was created by his grandfather.
  • During the aftershocks of the April 18, 1906 earthquake, he was tossed into a wall and broke his nose. He was four years old.
  • He was frequently sick and diagnosed with hypochondria.
  • He fell in love with nature at a young age. He and his family were close to Lobos Creek, Baker Beach, and Lands End.
  • His father’s business dropped after the grandfather’s death and the Panic of 1907. Their lifestyle changed drastically.
